What Does It Actually Mean To Be In A Community?

Not followers. Not fans. Something older than that.
There is a word that gets thrown around so much it has almost lost its meaning.
Community.
Every brand uses it. Every app claims to have one. Every newsletter ends with "join our community." But if you strip away the language and the marketing, what does it actually look like? What does it feel like?
I have been sitting with this question for a while now.
Because BAVA started getting called a community before I even had a name for what we were building. And honestly, that made me stop and ask myself — are we actually that? Or are we just a brand with a nice story and good aesthetics?
I needed to find out what the real answer was.

I have seen this in the underground scenes across Delhi. Nobody is there because an algorithm pushed them to it. Nobody needed a reminder notification or a discount code. They are there because they found a room full of people who feel the same thing they feel, even if none of them can fully explain what that thing is.
That is not marketing. That is belonging.
Hip hop has always understood this better than anyone. The cypher is not a performance. It is a test. Can you hold your own? Are you actually here or are you just showing up? The people who survive a cypher are not the ones with the cleanest bars. They are the ones who are genuinely present, in it, no performance, no pretence.
That is the standard I want BAVA to be held to.
Not by how many people are watching. But are the right people actually here?
Community does not start with a lot of people. It starts with the right ones.
When Raftaar wore one of our vests, there was no package sent to his team. No ask, no brief, no arrangement. He saw it, something in it spoke to him, and he put it on.
Same with Panther. Same with Vankim, who ended up wearing a BAVA piece in a music video.
None of that was engineered.
And I think about why that matters so much to me. Because an artist who moves the way those artists move does not put something on their body out of obligation. They wear it because it says something they want to say. Because it fits the way they see themselves. You cannot manufacture that moment. You can only build something real enough that it earns it.
Those three moments told me more about what BAVA actually is than any strategy session ever could.
